Jessica Elisheva Emerson 2020 2nd Place - on feeling seen as a writer, on finding an agent
Elisheva Emerson - 2020 2nd Place Equal, from the verb: to know
What made you decide to submit your work to the First Pages Prize?
It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me. I had a polished opening and nearly-finished manuscript and I needed time and support to finish and seek an agent. You can't win if you don't submit!
How did you decide what you wanted to submit?
I only had one manuscript, so for me it was easy...I submitted in order to advance my novel-in-progress.
And then, what was it like to be one of the final winners?
It was the salve my writing life needed. It also happened early in the pandemic and after a pregnancy loss, so it truly brought joy, hope, and inspiration to my creative process. I immediately felt supported, boosted, seen.
What changed for you as a result of being a final winner?
I signed with an agent seven months after winning, and I'm so proud to be represented by the incredible Amanda Orozco and Carolyn Forde at Transatlantic. My novel is currently on submission!
What was your experience with the editorial guidance that came with the prize—how was the process and what impact did it have on your work?
The editorial process was key in helping me revise the first 25 pages and finish polishing the manuscript, which helped lead to obtaining representation.
What has surprised you most about being part of this prize?
The camaraderie between the winners in my cohort was a delightful surprise and moral boost.
What advice or tips might you have for people thinking of submitting to the FIRST PAGES PRIZE this year?
Just SUBMIT! Do it. Today. Don't doubt yourself. Don't second-guess your place in the market. Send your beautiful story and see what comes of it.
